Fordite, also known as Detroit agate or Motor City agate, is a lapidarist term for polished pieces of finely-layered paint masses from automobile factories.
Earlier in the 1930’s, the cars were painted in beautiful elegant colours and so, there are many colors seen on the Fordite gemstones. Each of the colors that formed patterns was beautifully outlined with grey, which is a defining factor.
One can see as many as 7 to 8 colors on a Fordite gemstone. Each of the Fordite stone slags is furthermore put to processing such of polishing extensively, cutting and jewelry making.
The pieces of jewelry that are made out of the Fordite stones have a high demand. This is because, as the time passed, the colors on the cars changed, too. In fact, the modern day cars are seen with standard set of colors on them.
Fordite: also known as motorcity agate, motor agate, or Detroit agate. But how did it become so widely known as Fordite? There is much debate in the industry over the name of this automotive paint by-product. Many believe that the material should not be referred to as an agate because it is man-made but others believe the paint should be referred to as something more specific to its origin. Fordite is the most common name for this Michigan-made product, but you may hear it referred to as something different. There are no known direct ties to the Ford Motor Company or any of the other large automotive manufacturers but the name.
Fordite jewelry is known by a few different names, including Detroit Agate and Motor Agate. This beautiful "stone" is actually the remains of old car paint from the automobile plants in Detroit and elsewhere. At one time automobiles were painted in paint booths with sprayers. Over time, overspray would build up on the walls and drains in these facilities. There can be thousands of layers of paint that make up a single Fordite stone. These would go through the ovens to be cured and hardened. After a while, this overspray would need to be cut and removed. Somewhere along the line, a few clever gem-cutters had the idea of making cabochons out of this old car paint and this resulted in the beautiful Fordite jewelry that we see today.
Believe it or not, this is actually rarer than most stones, including diamonds! Why is it so rare? Well, today cars are not painted in the same way, so the old paint that has been chiseled off the assembly line and booths are no longer available. Simply speaking, there is a very small supply of Fordite in the world
